Sciatica

Sciatica refers to pain that travels along the path of the sciatic nerve.

The sciatic nerve travels from the lower back through the hips and buttocks and down each leg.

Symptoms

  • Lower back pain
  • Pain in the rear or leg that is worse when sitting
  • Hip pain
  • Burning or tingling down the leg
  • Weakness, numbness, or a hard time moving the leg or foot
  • A constant pain on one side of the rear
  • A shooting pain that makes it hard to stand up
  • Causes:
    • Birth defect in that area of the spine or sudden injury (acute trauma).
    • In adults, the most common cause is abnormal wear on the cartilage and bones, such as arthritis. The condition mostly affects people over 50 years old.

     

    Who are at Risk?

    • It’s especially common in kids who do gymnastics or play football.
    • Birth defect with thinner areas of vertebrae that are prone to breaking and slipping
    • People who are 50 years and older
    • Have a degenerative spinal condition
